Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life” (Proverbs 4:23). Our hearts are the hidden source from which all our words, actions, and desires flow. What we allow to shape our inner life will eventually shape our entire lives. That is why Scripture warns us to guard our hearts with care.
Too often, our hearts are led astray by pride, envy, or the restless pursuit of recognition. The world tells us that life is found in self-fulfillment, success, or comparison with others. But these paths drain us, leaving our hearts dry and weary. This is the ancient temptation from Eden: to live apart from God, making ourselves the center.
In Christ, we are called to a better way. He offers a new heart, renewed by His Spirit and freed from the lies of self-sufficiency. Guarding our hearts doesn’t mean shutting them off, but keeping them open to God’s truth and love. It means choosing humility over pride, gratitude over envy, prayer over worry.
When Christ reigns at the center of our hearts, His peace and joy overflow into every part of life. The springs of life flow not from striving harder, but from resting deeply in Him.
May we watch over our hearts today, finding true life in Christ alone.
